From War Parts into Symbols of Hope: How We Recycle Artillery Shell Casings for Our Products

At Saint Javelin, we believe in the power of transformation—turning the remnants of war into symbols of hope and resilience. Each of our unique products tells a story, not just of creativity and craftsmanship, but of survival, the fight for freedom, and the enduring spirit of the Ukrainian people. Here's a glimpse into how we collaborate with Ukrainian veterans to create our products from recycled artillery shell casings.

The story of our products starts with the collection of artillery shell casings on the frontlines. Some of these casings are brought to us directly to our partners at Klamra by their team, while others are provided by volunteers, fellow soldiers, and supporters from across Ukraine. When planning several collections ahead, we also purchase the shell casings to ensure we have enough materials for the future. These casings, once instruments used in the effort to liberate Ukraine, become the foundation of something beautiful.

Sketching the Vision

The creative process starts with a conversation — a dynamic exchange of ideas between our team and the veterans. Together, we sketch out initial concepts, focusing on the key elements that will shape the final design. Our goal is to incorporate traditional Ukrainian elements, symbols of Ukraine's modern fight — like popular weapons systems — and humor, a hallmark of Saint Javelin, to create something truly unique. This collaborative approach allows us to infuse personal stories and cultural significance into every piece, making each product more than just a souvenir, but a meaningful artifact.

Bringing the Vision to Life

Once the design is finalized, we create molds for casting. The casings are melted down and poured into these molds, transforming the once rigid metal into a malleable state we like to call "liquid gold." This is where the true magic happens—where the cold, hard remnants of war are reborn, crafted with precision and care by the hands of those who once also took part in battles for Ukraine's freedom.

The Finishing Touches

After casting, the raw items are carefully cleaned, polished, and refined. Our team of veterans meticulously processes each piece, ensuring it meets the highest standards of quality. From mechanical tooling to various "spa treatments" in tumbling baths, each product undergoes a thorough transformation. We may even add cold enamel by hand, giving the final touch that makes every item a unique work of art.

A Symbol of Strength

Our items made from recycled artillery shell casings are more than just collectibles, they are symbols of human strength. They are crafted by veterans who've been through the toughest experiences of war and come out with a new sense of purpose. In fact, this idea of transforming materials from war into art has a long history, known as trench art. Soldiers throughout history have turned battlefield scraps into personal keepsakes, and now, we continue that tradition with every piece we create.

By purchasing these items, you're not just supporting Ukrainian veterans—you're becoming part of a powerful story of hope and healing. Thank you for being a part of this journey with us. Together, we're turning the scars of war into symbols of peace, one shell casing at a time.
