Poet, artist, and Kobzar (a bard in Ukrainian culture), Taras Shevchenko, used art to protest against serfdom and advocate for Ukraine’s freedom. Taras was imprisoned by Tsar Nicholas I for being critical of the russian empire. He spent more than 10 years in exile, far away from Ukraine, but it didn’t stop him from creating art and enriching Ukrainian culture.
